How State qualification works, and how these numbers are calculated

Qualifying by place. The winner of each event at each Region carnival goes to State. There are seven Regions, so that is usually seven athletes.

Qualifying by performance. LAVic pools results from all Regions and fills the rest of the State field with the best marks. You must finish in the top 10 at your own Region to be considered. Most fields hold 24 athletes. The 800m, every Under 17 event, and the Under 16 field events and hurdles hold 16 (Rule 604).

High Jump and Race Walks. The top-10 rule does not apply. Instead you must clear the State starting height, or beat the walk standard, even if you won your Region (Rule 610).

"Last in to State" is the weakest Region mark of anyone who appeared in that State event, counting only athletes who qualified on performance. It already reflects withdrawals and replacements. When it is marked field not full, fewer athletes than the maximum went to State. Usually that means every eligible athlete went, or a tie at the cutoff left a spot empty.

"Rules model" applies the 2026/27 field sizes to that season's Region results. It is a guide for future seasons. It differs from the actual result where rules changed, athletes withdrew, or High Jump countbacks decided ties.

Data notes. Age groups for 2020/21 to 2022/23 were not in the source data. They were inferred by linking athletes to later seasons. 2020/21 had no Under 17 events. Region assignment for those years comes from the carnival venue. Athlete names are shortened to a first name and initial. Multi-Class and invitational results are not included.
